Isolated guitar and bass tracks

We love vintage musical instruments and we love vintage recordings.

The sixties and the seventies have been the most exciting decades in terms of sound research and recording technique. However, we love it when the technology which is surrounding us nowadays provides us with a whole new way to listen to our favorites.

Digital technology such as the moog file format and even popular video-games such as Guitar Hero allow us to tear a song a part and listen to one isolated track at the time. Whether the purpose of doing this is to learn thoroughly a song on guitar or find out what kind of mixing tricks have been used to create the sound that we love so much, what we discover is astonishing and inspiring. The musicians’ skills and technique don’t seem to be quite as important as the feeling they’ve put into it. We often find mistakes in the execution, mistakes that disappear or even add a magic feeling when we listen to the track in its whole.
Many isolated tracks are hosted on youtube. As Vintage & Rare we picked our top 5. Needless to mention that these tracks are taken from the history of rock.

So, whether you’re looking for inspiration or if you want to analyze how your guitar hero used to rip his instrument in the studio, or how he wanted his track mixed in your head, go ahead and check these links. Tim Commerford grooves his way through the song..It’s hard not to imagine the drums pattern though..The rhythmic session in this song is a badass rolling stone.

How to date vintage fender amps

Dating Fender Amps

1951-1967 – Tube chart on the inside of the amp is stamped with two letters (A – Q):

The first letter designates the year and the second letter designates the month.

Dating Contemporary Fender Amplifiers

All Fender amplifiers manufactured from 1990 – present include a date code printed on the quality assurance (QA) sticker on the back of the amp chassis, and are dated the by the first letter as the year and the second letter as the month.

ALL other Fender Amplifiers can be dated by the components inside:

In almost every Fender amplifier there are several EIA (manufacturer) codes followed by a date code, typically found on the speaker(s), transformer(s), tubes, caps, and occasionally pots. The EIA code will consist of 3 numbers followed by a date code of 3 or 4 numbers designating the year and the week. To give an example, a typical Oxford speaker from the ’60s will look something like: 465-217. 465 designating the Oxford EIA code, 2 designating the year 1962, and 17 designating the 17th week of ’62. Take a look at this ’62 Fender Princeton Amp, and you’ll see that exact speaker, as well as the typical Schumacher transformers (EIA 606) used in Fender amplifiers.

In April 2012 Nicolai from Vintage & Rare had a great opportunity to meet Werner Kozlik at the Frankfurt Show 2012. Werner is owner of Stevens Custom Guitars and Munich Repair Shop. At the show they were presenting the whole range of instruments they do in Stevens Custom Guitars Company.

They are mostly focused on development and production of musical instruments, such as Steal String Guitars, Jazz Guitars, Irish Bouzoukis, Acoustic Bass Guitars and custom orders.

Video blog: Norwegian Wood Series / Husemoen Guitars

Frankfurt show 2012 was a great opportunity for Nicolai from Vintage & Rare to meet Øystein Husemoen from Norwegian Wood Series / Husemoen Guitars.

The Norwegian Wood Series are made entirely from woods that grow in Norway. The advantage is that they do not have to use the rainforest to timber in order to create a good sound. These handmade guitars combine maximum playability with a rich tone and a classic design.

Video blog: 1961 Fender Stratocaster

Here we have Doc Pittillo from The Guitar Doctor. He told us a very cool story regarding his 1961 Fender Stratocaster.

Doc got this guitar when he was very young, when he just started being interested in music and guitars. The story behind it is very interesting. While he was working on one boat he met a man who was its owner. In their conversation Doc told him that he started playing guitars and that he likes it a lot. The man said that he has a guitar factory. That man was Leo Fender.

This 1961 Fender Stratocaster was one of the first guitars that Leo gave him. The guitar was unfinished, but Doc fixed everything. He said to Vintage & rare that this is one of the best sounding Strats he has ever played.

Video blog: Gibson Les Paul 1958 & 1959 Sunburst Original Vintage Guitars

Here we have Tom Wittrock. He is showing us Original Vintage Gibson Les Paul 1958 & 1959. Tom Wittrock has owned and operated Third Eye Music since 1976, and is now the most established vintage guitar store in the Springfield, Missouri area. Tom buys, sells and trades all kinds of guitars and related items.

You are looking at two of Toms late 50′s Les Pauls. The first guitar is a 1958 model that Tom had nicknamed ”The other woman”. The second guitar is 1959 model that is nicknamed ”Donna”. He has had both of these guitars for twenty-five years. He brought them to the Arlington Guitar Show because a lot of people almost never get a chance to see these things up close. This way they could look at them closely.

History of the guitars

The Gibson Les Paul 1958 has been through several dealer collectors hands back in 70’s and 80’s when it landed with Tom and he decided that he is the rightful owner and that this guitar is staying with him.

He said that he didn’t know much about the background of the Gibson Les Paul 1959. Apparently some man who was a repairman got it off a customer and sold it for a lot of money and that boosted his business, so he was able to stay in it and do a good job. Then it came into Toms hands.

The Paganini Il Cannone Guarnerious violin – legendary!!

Paganini is often described as the world’s first virtuoso and is still widely recognized as one of the greatest ever. While the story of Paganini’s life story is fascinating reading the story of his favorite violin – his “Il Cannone” (The Canon) is no less so.

Niccoló Paganini (1782-1840) achieved massive fame throughout Europe and was the most celebrated virtuosi of his time, and today he is considered the father of modern day violin techniques. Sadly he lived before the time of recordings, but this rendition of one of his most famous pieces – his Caprice No. 24 – should give you an idea of what his musical and technical prowess could produce. The artist seen is Alexander Markov.

Originally Paganini played a valuable Amati violin. This however he lost in a bet as he was heavily addicted to gambling. Instead a generous businessman and amateur violinist donated him a neglected Guarneri violin. The instrument distinguished itself by having lots a resonance and a booming quality which immediately attracted Paganini. He named it “Il Cannone” – The Canon, and it was on this violin he wrote some of his fastest pieces which require advance technique and performance at breakneck speed.

Upon his death Paganini donated “Il Cannone” to the Italian town of Genoa who still holds the violin at the Palazzo Doria Tursi. It is now considered a national treasure. All the principle parts of the violin are still intact a unique fact in itself, considering that this instrument dates back to 1742-43. Notice that it doesn’t have any chin rest, and instead the varnish which also is the original coating has rubbed of. This is due to the fact that Paganini like his contemporaries didn’t use a chin rest. Instead they rested their head directly on the sounding board.

The violin is supervised by a panel of experts. Among them is Mario Trabucco who is charged with playing the instrument regularly and Bruce Carlson, a violinmaker in charge of the conservation. Every year Genoa hosts a violin contest and the winner gets to play the masterpiece so thankfully this masterpiece has not been reduced to a museum artifact. Rarely it’s lended to guest cities with requirements of police escorts and multimillion dollar insurance policies. It can be heard on jazz-violinist Regina Carters “Paganini: After a dream”.
