Borne Handmade is a Luthier-company which specializes in hand build acoustic and electric stringed instruments. Our instruments are one offs that are all build in accordance with the wishes of the customer and the whims and moods of the luthier. We prefer to work with woods that are mainly of European origin and preferably as local as possible.

As often as possible from Bornholm. Rules are meant to be broken and therefore we also use rosewood, ebony and other exotic and traditional luthiers’ woods, where we find it suiting and purposeful to improve or beatify a sound or look and to meet the wishes of the customer.I our opinion one should always regard tradition in a respectful manner, but also challenge tradition in order to evolve. We always experiment with woods and materials and we constantly move the boundaries for “the way things are done”.

We have a passion and love for Nordic design and materials and we believe that it holds enormous beauty and amazing sound quality. Therefore we proudly use Flamed birch, smoked Danish oak, cherry, plum, apple and a lot of other woods that aren’t usually associated with instrument-building. But in our experience they are perfect for building.We always build from scratch and we are proud to say that very few components are bought from other manufacturers. We buy strings, fret wire, cones, electronics and tuning machines and these are always of a high quality.We work in all kinds of materials. To mention a few: Bone, horn, teeth, pearl and abalone.

We do inlays and enamel. We make components in silver, bronze and aluminum using sandcasting. Blacksmithing with iron and steel. Plate work and soldering; brass, silver, bronze, cobber, stainless steel etc.We hail from a proud tradition of woodwork, woodcarving, sandcasting, blacksmithing and fine mechanics.We started the company when passion and hobby became an important and time-consuming activity of such serious nature, that we had to go pro.

The owner and director is Laura Borne and Andreas Borne is Luthier and creative director. We are both lifetime-musicians and Andreas life as a guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, craftsman and jack of all trades have come together in a union that enables us to build instruments with hand and heart. Andreas possession of Dobro, National, Weissenborn and Knutzon, his practice as a bottleneck, lap slider and the inspiration from these instruments and builders is the core in the making of special instruments with haunting sounds.We also do setup repair and restoring of all stringed instruments. We are specialists in resonators and hollownecks.
