Epiphone has a long history, both in creation as a company and in terms of its relationship with popular music. Founded in 1873 in what is now Turkey, Epiphone was originally a company that made lutes and violins; when the company moved to the United States, they began making mandolins as well. After World War I, Epiphone began making banjos, and it wasn't until 1928 that they made their first guitar. They were ultimately bought out by Gibson in 1957.
Since the Gibson takeover, the Epiphone name has come to mean Gibson-style guitars with a smaller price tag and a slightly different sound. Those looking for Gibson quality at a lower price are often satisfied with an Epiphone, as the low, fat tones are in synch with those found in a Gibson.
Epiphone guitars are most famously the guitars played by the Beatles (Paul McCartney still plays his), but other famous musicians toting this brand include Keith Richards, Les Paul, and Ace Frehley.
