The characteristics of the violin was acquired in 16th-century Italy. Further modifications occurred in the 18th century. Collectors of violins prize the instruments made by the families of Salò, Maggini, Stradivari, Guarneri and Amati spanning from the 16th to the 18th century in Italy and by Stainer in Austria.
Great amounts of instruments comes from the hands of less famous makers, as well as greater numbers of mass-produced "trade violins" from cottage industries in places in the Czech Republic, France and Germany.
