Storytellers Vol. 2
In March I wrote a blog titled “Storytellers” that was a really cool story from our friend Pete in the UK about how he got to see Eric Clapton before……Well, before he was all that he is known for today. Pete bought a really cool Firebird V from us earlier this year and is currently rocking and recording with it. A large part of why I love what we do here at Thunder Road Guitars is the fact that we often get the opportunity to connect with folks of all ages and backgrounds from all over the globe. And you know what, people are interesting, and it’s safe to say that everyone has a story. Today, we’re gonna hear a very cool story from our new friend Clyde, who is from Australia and just purchased a minty 2004 Gibson Les Paul Historic ’58 reissue from us. So, without further adieu, here is Clyde’s story.
“In 1972, when I was 16yo, Led Zeppelin came to Melbourne, Australia where I live. I had camped out to get tickets and the concert was at an arena called Kooyong Stadium. That morning, before the gig, I heard a song on the radio that just blew me away. I knew it was Zeppelin but didn’t clearly hear the title after the song had finished. I wondered if they would play it at the concert that afternoon. The tickets I had scored were five rows from the front and dead center, so I guess I had the best you could get. Zeppelin opened the gig with the Immigrant Song and then they proceeded through their early hits. Half way through the gig it started to rain and there was concern about all the electrical gear, so they did an acoustic set under cover until the rain stopped. When the rain stopped Robert Plant said to the audience that the band would now play a few songs from their new album. Because the set had been acoustic and the stadium was outdoors, the noise level in the crowd was very low. Jimmy Page started to play the intro to the new song and I leaped into the air and shouted at the top of my voice…….” Beauty….Stay Away From Heather” Being so close, he heard me……like about 1000 other people….He looked down and pointed at me and said “and this is our new release called Stairway To Heaven”. He smiled and said it slowly so that I would get it right in the future. I remember feeling like such an idiot and all the guys I went to the concert with gave me hell for years. Occasionally the story still comes up when we get together.
