/ Salvador Ibanez Classical, VG, Small Tone Wonder, HC, Played In For 100 Years! / 1915 / Guitar
This small classical guitar seems to be a student type of guitar made by the famous Salvador Ibanez. Like all Salvador Ibanez guitars its top Quality guitar. With Maple back and sides and Spruce top. The guitar is all solid woods, with Mahogany neck, and Maple heel. The top is bound with Maple, and ornamated with 3ply purfling. Overall the condition is very good except for a thick layer of laquer that i would advice to replace for Nitrocellulose, a obviously replaced bridge, and a repaired back crack in the lower right bout area. The fretboard seems to be made of a light kind curly wood like maybe pear wood or walnut. Width at the nut is 53mm and the scale is 645mm. Once you strung it, your surprised how such a small, and old, not so cool looking instrument sounds. Surprising all the way from intonation to tone, balance and dynamics. It acts as if it is a mastergrade guitar. Despite the thick layer of finish and relativly budget woods and construction, one feels immediatly this comes from a masters hand. We surely don\\\'t overrate this little instrument to compare her tone-wise to many high quality classicals made these days. more then that, its played in for a hundred years or so and probably beats most of them! it has great tone and good sustain, has very appealing base and inspiring dynamics, with beautifull trebles and superb balance throughout the fingerboard. it still holds a bit back on sustain, but we blame that on the thick layer of finish..once this dissapears, you will be in for even a bigger surprise, im sure. Playabillity is comfortable, not to say low, around 3.5mm on the 12th fret, what makes here easy to play for almost anyone, the headstock was adorned with a guitar shop sticker, we carefully removed, but still left a stain in the finish. The guitar travels in a simple modern case.
Some background information on Salvador Ibáñez (1854-1920) was a Spanish luthier . He made guitars, ukeleles and mandolins and other stringed instruments. These instruments were considered the finest of their age and are prized for their excellent quality and impeccable workmanship. This . At eleven years of age Ibáñez became an apprentice in guitar construction at Calle Muela . In 1870 he started his own company: Salvador Ibáñez y Albiñara. The company was registered at Calle Cubells. Working in his shop were the ten-year-old José Ibáñez and Magdalena Albiñara y Magraner, from Ollería, Valencia. In 1896 he first appeared in the trade guides at Calle Ruzafa Valencia and from 1898 to 1906 his shop was located at Calle Bajada de San Francisco. Salvador Ibáñez made banderias, lutes and nine-string guitars and also guitars with detachable necks. In 1897 he made the world’s first double-necked guitar. In the period 1915-20 Salvador Ibáñez y hijos (Salvador Ibáñez and Sons) were located at Calle Bajada de San Francisco and at Calle Padre Rico Valencia. When he died in 1920 his workshop continued to be managed by his two sons until it was completely destroyed during the Spanish Civil war (1936-1939) in a bloody street fight, which cost the lives of many of the personnel. After the Salvador Ibáñez workshop had been destroyed and with the Salvador Ibáñez guitars not being available (and very much sought after due to their excellent quality), the Japanese distributor Hoshino Gakki decided to start making Ibáñez guitars of their own after years of importing Salvador Ibáñez guitars to Japan. They purchased the trademark and started production, first naming the guitars "Ibanez Salvador" and later Ibanez obtained great success in the 1970s and 1980s. Hoshino Gakki currently produces both acoustic and electric guitars using the Ibanez brandname but is mostly orientated to producing electric guitars. Julian Bream has played a Salvador Ibáñez guitar. Eric Clapton has owned several original Salvador Ibáñez guitars, one of which was sold at a benefit auction in 1999 obtaining a final price of $42,000 USD
