Here’s a rare beautiful instrument – from C F Martin, the 00-42SC John Mayer model, which replicates a Stagecoach or early Travel Guitar! This spectacular instrument combines a 00 size body with Sitka Spruce and Cocobolo, and adds ’42’ series inlays and appointments.
A 12-fret neck and slotted peghead are used to keep the dimensions down, keeping in mind that the SC designates that these were designed to be used as entertainment on stagecoach, wagon, train or horse journeys (or perhaps ordeals).
The 00-42SC model was designed during 2012 in collaboration with John Mayer, produced in limited numbers and has not been available for a number of years.
Originally, the C. F. Martin 00-42SC John Mayer back and sides and headplate would have been Rosewood, meaning Brazilian Rosewood, and respecting current realities of wood harvesting, Cocobolo has been substituted. The neck is Mahogany, as are the body blocks, and the pyramid bridge and bound fingerboard are Ebony. An Abalone layer traces the top binding and soundhole, and as an added touch, the fingerboard end is inlaid with a continuation of the rosette section covered by the fingerboard tag.
This 00-42SC John Mayer Stagecoach model was built during 2015 at the C F Martin Custom Shop in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. It is in pristine condition, with almost no evidence of play.
The fingerboard is a bit wider than on most modern production guitars so perfect for fingerstyle – the ‘standard’ maximum width is generally 1.75 inches or 44.45mm, and here it’s 1.875 inches or 47.625mm. The neck has a modified V profile, typical of Martin guitars of that period.
The original Martin Custom Shop hard shell, arched top case with silk cover is included.
