C.F. Martin / D28 Herringbone / 1940 / Natural / Guitar

1940 Golden Era Martin D-28, also considered to be the holy acoustic grail. It’s an early 1940 guitar; one of the cleanest crack-free examples around and with an astonishing sound.

Some 25 years ago, the guitar was sent back to Martin for a refresh of the entire instrument, including a neck set, a new bridge, and small maple bridge plate, fretboard, and a body refinish. The guitar is totally crack-free, except for a small shim, added under the pickguard either to avoid a future crack on the weakest spot on a Martin guitar, or an invisible pickguard crack repair. That's the only suspect crack-repair on this beautiful graceful relic of the past. The wear on this guitar is minimal, there is small scratch in the lower top, and little play-wear.

This is a guitar in excellent restored condition and is setup perfectly. It has been set up with medium strings, has very easy playability, and the big deep sound that made these instruments famous. This truly is what a good bluegrass guitar is all about. Bridge and saddle are full height but traditionally bellying lightly; the ivory nut is still original although cleaned. All in all this guitar looks almost as new, except for some weather checking and light playwear in the top finish.

If a clean authentic pre-war herringbone is what you’ve been looking for, this might be the best guitar to invest your money in. This is a great opportunity on a truly unique instrument, that is restored with respect for it's heritage. Comes with Geib style Martin Case.

Classicrockguitars started in 2010 as a spin-off from a vintage guitar collection. We buy, restore and sell vintage solidbody guitars, hollowbody guitars, archtop guitars, flattop guitars, amplifiers and vintage parts & accessories from the great rock & roll era 1955-1975.

We specialize in great Gretsch guitars and amplifiers, all made in the USA, and in sparkling Eko guitars, all made in Italy.

In addition we sell other USA-made guitars such as Epiphone, Gibson, Guild, National and Rickenbacker. We also sell other sparkling fetish Italian garage-rock guitars such as Goya, Hagstrom, Marinucci and Crucuanelli, next to great Levin jazz archtops. Finally we have a great collection of Framus, Höfner, Hopf and other vintage German rock & roll guitars from the Star Club Hamburg era.

All our guitars and amplifiers are in (very) good, excellent or mint condition and are sold with OHSC and matching vintage strap unless - occassionally - mentioned otherwise. Our acoustic archtop and flattop guitars are sold with matching vintage floating or soundhole pickups that do not compromise the guitar.

We also sell professional high quality image products from vintage guitars such as posters, booklets, and calendars that are made in our own image studio.
