A rare early example of Danelectro’s short horn 6-string bass in the stunning copper finish. Replaced nut but otherwise all-original and dripping with vintage character. This one nails that sweet spot between baritone guitar and bass. Very cool.

This is a first-generation Danelectro 3612 6-string bass — essentially a short-scale baritone tuned E-to-E like a guitar, but an octave lower. Finished in the classic Danelectro copper with a white vinyl edge binding, it just oozes vintage character and cool. The single lipstick pickup delivers a punchy, mid-forward voice that sits perfectly in a mix with a unique voice that is ideal for doubling guitar lines, adding low-end texture, or creating unique parts that cut through either as the sole bass instrument or alongside a traditional 4 string bass part.

As with all first-generation Dano basses, this features a Masonite top and back with a poplar frame, paired with a bolt-on maple neck and Brazilian rosewood board.

The lipstick pickup is original and sounds superb — bright, clear, and with that unmistakable hollow twang these old Danos are known for. Through a bass amp it delivers a tight, focused thump; through a guitar amp it takes on an entirely different personality — almost surfy and baritone-like.

This example is in excellent overall condition for a 65 year old instrument. Some light wear to the body around the arm rest area and on the back of the neck, along with a handful of small nicks, but no breaks, mods or repairs. The neck is straight, action is spot on, and the frets have plenty of life left. Electronics are untouched and working perfectly.

Original tuners, bridge, knobs and pickguard are all present and correct. The original metal nut has at some point been replaced with a nylon nut but other than that everything is completely original. The copper finish has mellowed beautifully over the years and looks superb.
