Epiphone / Zephyr Electric E312T / 1960 / Sunburst / Guitar

Introduced in 1950, the Zephyr Regent was Epiphone's most popular electric cutaway guitar. Epi's journeyman 17" instrument, the Zephyr Regent was positioned against its main competitor, the Gibson ES-350. Featuring a deeper cutaway than its Gibson rival, the Zephyr Regent facilitates upper fingerboard access by two to three frets.

In 1959 the electric version of the Zephyr model was renamed to “Zephyr Electric” and the body depth was diminished to 1.875”. Early Gibson Kalamazoo-made Zephyrs like this one used older, pre-Gibson, Epiphone parts, including New York pickups and the classic metal Epiphone bikini headstock logo. This Zephyr was built in the last year before the hardware and pickups changed to Gibson parts. John Lee Hooker used a thinline Epiphone Zephyr widely throughout the 1960s.

Due to the long scale length (25.5”), the large hollow but thin body and the New York pickups this Zephyr Electric has a unique character that really sets it apart from a Gibson archtop. The frets are quite thin but still have plenty of life left. The neck is quite widely spaced in the nut and has a gentle V-shape which makes for a very comfortable playing feel. The vintage '60s Bigsby B6 vibrato tailpiece and bridge were added later and the pickguard and bracket are long gone. A late ‘60s Gibson acoustic hardcase is included.
