Ervin Somogyi / Thin Modified Dreadnought / 1996 / Guitar

Somogyi's guitars are sought after by discerning musicians and collectors alike, cherished for their exceptional tone, playability, and aesthetic beauty. His designs often incorporate innovative features, pushing the limits of what is possible in terms of tone, responsiveness, and ergonomics. Beyond his technical prowess, Somogyi's legacy extends to his role as a mentor and educator within the lutherie community. Through workshops, lectures, and writings, he has shared his wealth of knowledge and experience, inspiring countless aspiring luthiers to pursue their craft with passion and dedication. In a collaboration dating back to 1996, Hideyo Moriya of the California Guitar Trio teamed up with Ervin to craft this Thin Modified Dreadnought—an instrument engineered for unparalleled performance. Featuring a multiscale fretboard spanning from 26 to 25.125 inches, a sleek florentine cutaway, and a slender body design augmented by a Manzer-style body wedge, this Somogyi masterpiece embodies innovation and is a testament to the playing musician! Crafted from straight-grain Indian Rosewood for the body and adorned with a European Spruce top, this guitar showcases Ervin's signature segmented rosette, a hallmark of his exquisite craftsmanship. Recently, Hideyo entrusted Ray Kraut—himself a former apprentice of Somogyi—to breathe new life into this gem. The original pickup system was removed, restoring its acoustic purity and revealing its natural tonal resonance. With painstaking care, Hideyo oversaw the refinishing process, restoring its aesthetic allure to its full glory. But the transformation doesn't end there. Ray Kraut ingeniously repurposed the previous pickup's side-mounted preamp into a squared up soundport, granting the player enhanced control over their sonic environment—a testament to the dedication to continuous improvement. Later on, a lot less dramatic LR Baggs Anthem was built in, ensuring the guitar can be used live as it was meant to be! Nestled within its original Calton case, seasoned by years of travel yet still standing strong, this is the first (and might be the only.) Somogyi we've ever had here at The Fellowship of Acoustics. Ready to embark on its next chapter, it awaits the touch of a discerning musician, poised to inspire and delight anew. Played by Radboud Withaar | Demo Gear: Ear Trumpet Labs Evelyn Stereo Microphone

ABOUT US

I have always been opposed to being trapped into a job eight hours a day to purchase the free time to do what I enjoy. That’s why i started the Fellowship of Acoustics. The fellowship of acoustics was founded by Rudi Bults, Guitarist and obsessed with tone and wood. The idea was offering real expertise when trading and selling the finest instruments in the world from our showroom in Bergentheim, Netherlands. Helping others find the right tools and enjoying an atmosphere that’s unhurried, honest and informative that’s my go. We are nothing like the "supermarket" style music stores, but specialize in string-things only. We are widely known for Flattop guitars but also sell electric, mandolins & banjo’s, amps, parts, and accessories. Our store has earned the reputation for being a great place to shop for the best products and service.
It is our hope that this new website - much more than a list of "gear" for sale - will serve as an example of our commitment to offering a more personal approach, a friendly atmosphere, and an ultimately more satisfying experience for our friends and customers.
If you have any questions just dial +31-523-232205 or e-mail info@thefellowshipofacoustics.com My name is Rudi Bults, and I’m always here to help out. Wherever possible, we would recommend that you visit our store and experience our instruments and service first hand. However, because of our high standards you can be confident of ordering online from us. We hope you enjoy your visit to our site, and welcome your feedback.
