Fender / 25th Anniversary Stratocaster / 1979 / Porsche Silver / Guitar
The Fender Anniversary Stratocaster came out in 1979 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Stratocaster guitar. It was the first anniversary/celebration model for Fender and their first instrument that was issued in a pre-determined, numbered limited quantity. This Strat design shows both old and new features for the era: it was the first Strat model to revert back to a 4-screw neck connection and a truss rod adjustment nut at the body end. The tuners however were modern newly designed by Sperzel non-locking machineheads.
The first 500 or so instruments produced were finished in Pearl White. Unfortunately these guitars suffered from finish issues due to experiments with a new polyester lacquer formula. The finish on these guitars started flaking of almost immediately after they came out of the factory. Many of these guitars were recalled and refinished by Fender in Porsche Silver (though Fender refers to it as "25th Anniversary Stratocaster Silver"), the color that was used in the rest of the production run. Porsche Silver tended to fade to a green/golden hue, like our example shows.
This guitar with serial number 254773 is from about halfway the production run of ca. 10000 instruments and came out of the factory in December 1979. It plays and sounds great with a strident tone and some great sustain from the ash body. While this is not a lightweight Strat by any means it is not as heavy as some other late ‘70s Strats we encountered before. This guitar had its frets replaced, got a new set of Schaller tuners (that look completely stock as there are no previous tuner holes visible) and was fitted with replacement black bridge saddles. The original black plastic molded case is included, as are some original store tags; the certificate is missing.
