I spent my formative years here in Atlanta playing the old '72 Jazz bass my Father gave me. It was my first bass and it took me from practicing in his recording studio to playing onstage with my first band to eventually opening for Motorhead in the Masquerade Theater. This all happened in a fairly short period of time and as I began to battle guitarists with stacks of Marshalls, I quickly realized that i needed...more. So, I did what tens of thousands of young, uneducated bass players did: I bastardized that bass in the effort to get a big, cutting tone. I mean I changed virtually everything on that bass, looking for a sound that would both hold down the bottom and still cut through the walls of heavy metal buzz that always seemed to send me scurrying to the corner of the room, next to my drummers. This was the period before I discovered Spector basses, but that's another story for another bass. The point is, the bass you see before you is the Jazz bass I wish I had back in those heady days. The active electronics, specially- designed pickups and mixable/ tone cut and boost features would have surely given me the voice I was seeking. In short, this is my Father's Jazz bass on steroids and the Fender bass world has come a long way from just a hunk of Alder and two passive pickups.
