Fender / Coronado II / 1967 / Wildwood I / Guitar
The Coronado was designed in the mid ‘60s by Roger Rossmeisl who was formerly employed by Rickenbacker. Fender intended to compete with the then very populair Gibson® ES-330/335® guitars and they were convinced it would become a succesful guitar but the Coronado never really caught on. These days the unique character of the Coronado is appreciated much more, these guitars are very comfortable to play, have great Fender necks and the DeArmond made pickups are powerful yet clear.
This 1967 Coronado has a Wildwood finish. This effect was created by injecting live birch trees with pigments that would enter the tree sap channels; after felling the tree and sawing it up the colour remained visible. The Wildwood I finish was natural birch ply with a green pigment.
The polyurethane finish is still very clean but the green on the front has faded from UV exposure. The guitar is 100% original, the frets show nearly no wear and it plays very smoothly. The vibrato system is somewhat similar to a Mustang system but is based on a blade spring. It has a very appealing somewhat loose feel, works remarkably well for subtle wobbles and stays in tune very well.
