De Coronado is in midden jaren '60 door Roger Rossmeisl, voormalig ontwerper voor Rickenbacker, ontworpen als antwoord van Fender op de op dat moment zeer populaire Gibson ES-330/335 modellen. In die tijd was de echter de publieke overtuiging dat een hollowbody met een geschroefde hals nooit iets kan zijn en verkocht het model slecht, ondanks dat Fender er hoge verwachtingen van had. Tegenwoordig wordt het unieke karakter van de Coronado meer gewaardeerd, onder andere vanwege de comfortabele halzen (die veel weg hebben van de Jazzmaster hals ca. '67) en de voor dit model unieke deArmond pickups, die wel wat doen denken aan Gretsch pickups.
Dit exemplaar is van begin 1967. Hoewel het serienummer op 1972 leek te duiden bleek uit nader onderzoek dat Fender voor de Bass V en Coronado modellen in laat '66 / vroeg '67 een reeks afwijkende serienummers heeft gebruikt, namelijk 501832 t/m 503000. De geblokte binding is indertijd door Rickenbacker gemaakt; de Fender fabriek was nooit erg goed in bindings en hebben dit werk in het begin uitbesteed. De bindings laten iets los op sommige plekken op de achterkant van de gitaar maar dit is geen ernstig of constructief probleem. Deze gitaar is in uitstekende staat, met een mooie licht verouderde nitrocellulose finish en nauwelijks fret slijtage en speelt erg makkelijk.
