Fender / Duo Sonic / 1959 / Olympic White / Guitar
Recently restored Fender Duo Sonic from 1959.
When this one came in it was in poor condition (see the last pic), but most of the original parts were with the guitar, so we decided to invest some TLC into it and look how it turned out! Those interested in the full story behind the restoration, please do visit the blog. I’ve documented it quite extensively.
So as you can see on the pics the guitar came in un-finished and the alder actually looked more like oak. It took allot of cleaning and sanding before it was ready for refinishing. The new Olympic White finish is genuine nitro-finish, which according to the supplier would be to the same specs. that Fender used back in the days. In short this would be nitro with a minimal addition or complete lack of plasticizers so it will gently age over time. The back of the neck had already been overspray in the past and has therefor only been wet-sanded during the restoration to give it a nice smooth feel. The back and front of the headstock still have the original finish and naturally the spaghetti-logo decal is original too, as are the tuners.
The electronics are mostly original except for the 3-way switch and the bridge-pickup which came from a 1966 Fender Mustang. Because the bridge-pickup has slightly more output it balances incredibly well with the neck pickup. The original neck pickup reads 5,75K while the bridge-pickup reads 6,50K. This means you can expect a wonderful low-output kind of responsiveness and true 50’s single-coil sweetness. The original pots are dated to wk 47 of 1958 and wk 16 of 1959. This dates the guitar to early 59′, which is consistent with the serial.no , early slabboard and lack of a neckdate (typical for the first months of 59′).
Normally a Duo Sonic is wired so that the second position of the 3-way switch combines both pickups in series which in 1956 would inevitably lead to the development of the humbucker. On this Duo we choose to wire the pickups in parallel which means the volume remains in balance with position 1 and 3, and makes for a tone somewhere between “twang” and “quack” so to say..
Though not fully original it has turned out to be a cool little axe with impressive tone. This offers the same quality other pre-CBS Fenders are known for. It’s built by the some workers, made out of the same materials, and comes from what is without a doubt the most legendary era of guitar-making. This restoration has been all about preserving a piece of that history.
Included is the original hardcase which is in very good condition. Even the latches are still working flawlessly after 57 years!
