Fender / Jaguar ** ON HOLD ** / 1965 / Sunburst / Guitar
When I think about a Jaguar, I don't normally think of the Beach Boys as they were a little before my time. Nor do I think about Hendrix; Once again a guitar legend but a single picture of Hendrix playing a Jag does not a legend make. When I think about a Jaguar, I think back on a rainy day in Georgia around this time of year in 1994. Hell, I was young then and just jamming to some tunes on the radio when all of a sudden a man comes over the speakers and tells me of a horrific scene in Seattle, Washington. The deep baritone voice described a blooded, suicidal scene which involved the front man of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain. Now, me being a Metalhead, I didn't care to much about this band. Why? Well, if video killed the radio star, then Nirvana killed what I loved so dearly which was Metal, hard rock, Hair bands and every other thing that stood before them. An all to familiar end to many in that profession, maybe it was an occupational hazard of the job. As we know, a Fender Jaguar wasn't the "go to" guitar for Kurt, rather, it was his backup. Kinda like if your main squeeze wasn't available on Friday night, then you would call in "the 'ole standby." This guitar isn't as sexy as a Les Paul and maybe it isn't as sought- after as a Stratocaster, but it is what refer to as "the lovable loser." Let's just call it the Kevin James of the instrument world. Defiantly different and with a unique design and functionality. Maybe that is why alternative bands loved them. Alternative? Absolutely- not mainstream and not the norm. Maybe that is you and maybe you decided to "not go along to get along." Much like Kurt, he was the definition of alternative, but come to think of it, isn't that what Rock was all about? To go against the grain, to be a rebel? Are you that Rebel without a cause? If you are, then come on in. The water's fine...
