So there I was, minding my own business, looking at seemingly endless run-of-the-mill Strats, Teles and SGs when something caught my eye. Beaming across the room I spotted the most glowing example of a rare custom colour, late 60's Jazz Bass I have ever had the good fortune to encounter. I knew as soon as I saw it I just had to buy it.

I chatted with the vendor at length about this stunning instrument. He had owned it for the last 20 years and in turn he claimed he bought it from the original owner who brought it to Europe when he was playing on the cruise liner scene during the 70’s and 80’s.

I studied it long and hard. He was asking a high price for it, but to my utter annoyance, as much as I looked and minutely studied every single detail and part, I could not find anything out of place, anything wrong, or anything at all to help me negotiate a better deal. It was just… well, perfect, rare, beautiful, stunning and 100% original in every way. I had no choice - I just had to buy it at the full asking price and by this time there was a queue of other eager buyers behind me keenly eyeing this golden beauty up...

This is a 1969, maybe very, very early 1970, 100% original Fender Jazz Bass in super rare Firemist Gold WITH matching headstock in very fine condition and original hard case. How many of these have you seen?

Plays perfectly with a nice low action and has that J Bass growl from the original late 60's grey bottom pickups. All hardware is totally original, including both covers and finger rest. All electrics are 100% original, including solder joints and the blue Ajax cap.

The super RARE, custom colour, Firemist Gold finish is stunning, just a little fade, just a few small dings and a bit of buckle rash. The neck pocket is perfect, just what you want to see. I have only ever seen one other Firemist Gold bass like this but only in pictures and that was nothing like as good a condition as this one is in.

The frets have hardly any wear, there is no rutting on the fingerboard, there are no dead spots and it has a lovely low action with plenty of room for adjustment. The last owner told me it had a truss rod issue when he first got it but this was fixed 20 years ago without changing any original parts and has been rock solid since then (yes, I did check the truss rod works fine in both directions).

This golden bass is as rare as they get and in quite exceptional condition. Yes, it is not cheap but if you seek the very best it will cost a bit more. I am not a bass player but I have given it to people who are and they have told me it is everything you want from a vintage J Bass. Trade me a nice vintage 6 string that I can understand - or come down to Cheltenham to try it out, and if you do, bring some cash as I guarantee it will be love at first sight...
