Fender / Jazzmaster / 1964 / Sunburst / Guitar
This Jazzmaster left the Fender factory by the end of 1964. It’s in great condition and still has its original, very vibrant sunburst colour.
All typical features of this transitional era for the Jazzmaster are there: it has a laminated rosewood fretboard with clay dots, grey bobine pickups with handwritten dates, single line Klusons and a small headstock showing the newer style large Fender logo with 6 patent numbers. This must be one of the last guitars that left the factory with clay dot positionmarkers, just before the pearl dots were phased in completely.
The finish on the front is in great shape apart from the usual dings and crazing. The neck finish is partly worn through, adding to a very nice well played-in feel that this guitar displays all over. The rear of the body shows some buckle rash, but nothing dramatic or anything that would detract from playing. The tortoise pickguard is in great shape, with only minor shrinkage or warping visible.
Compared to later CBS-era Jazzmasters this guitar has quite a full sound, but the grey bobine pickups also add some nice bite. It’s a very comfortable player thanks to the very comfortable neck shape that neither feels cramped or too wide and is shaped very evenly over the full length of the neck. The original frets show only minor wear and have plenty of life left for levelling, but are perfectly usable as is.
“Under the hood” the electronics are all original, including to the paper tape that was used to keep the wires together and fixed to the pickup shield.
This Jazzmaster is sold with its original whammy bar and a new black tolex Fender Custom Shop case.
