The Fender Mustang was added to the Fender program in 1964 and was aimed at starting and intermediate guitar players. The model evolved from the Musicmaster and Duo-Sonic student models and had a similar body shape, short 22.5” or 24” scale length neck and pickup(s). With the addition of a newly designed vibrato system the Mustang was born.

The first Mustangs were issued in the colours red, white and blue and featured a slab body without much contouring. In 1969 the Mustang was updated with new metallic finishes with a contrasting ‘Competition Stripe’ on the body, inspired by the NASCAR racing cars of the era. Belly- and armcontours were also added to improve comfort. Until 1971 the headstocks were finished in matching colours.

This Fender Mustang from 1969, finished in Competition Blue with matched headstock, has been heavily used but is in near original condition. The original blue colour faded to green-turquoise because the clear topcoat of the body lacquer has yellowed from age. This colour is maybe even more appealing than the original factory finish. The frets were renewed which makes this a comfortable and easy to play guitar. One of the pickup wires was resoldered when it cut out. The lightweight contoured body adds to the playing comfort and agility of this guitar. This Mustang is the near mirror-image (it’s not a lefty) of the guitar Kurt Cobain plays in the “ Smells like Teen Spirit” videoclip.

An original late ‘60s Fender/Victoria grey Mustang case is included. The vibrato bar is missing but the vibrato system can be operated without it by palm, or it can be replaced with a reissue bar.
