Fender / Mustang / 1969 / Competition Blue / Guitar For Sale
From their very beginnings, Leo Fender saw student models as a way to keep his instruments in players’ hands as they progressed. Introduced in 1964, the Mustang was the last of the line. It featured a 24” scale, twin pickups with new switching system and was the first of the student guitars to be fitted with a vibrato. The Competition versions were available from 1969 through to 1973 and featured the aforementioned stripes as well as some more elaborate custom colors, Competition Red, Burgundy and Orange.
This guitar is in great condition. The Competition Burgundy finish has the odd bump and knock but it still retains its lustrous hue and has started its change to purple in a few places. There is a patch of wear near the jack and the front has faded slightly.
The neck, fretboard and frets are in equally fantastic shape with the gloss finish of the lacquer really showcasing the maple of the neck. The refret makes it a joy to play. The neck date reads as July 1969.
The plastics and hardware are in great condition.
Electronically there have been some slight changes with some wires having been exchanged. PIckups and pots are correct. The pots are dated week 44 of 1966.
The guitar comes with its correct hardshell case.
These guitars are a lot of fun. The neck feels comfortable and easy to play, with plenty of switching options. Both pickups are well balanced. This guitar certainly punches above its weight.
These guitars certainly have a unique appeal all of their own and all guitar players should try one at least once. Grab this one before it gets away.
