Fender / Stratocaster / 1965 / Black / Guitar
This 1965 Stratocaster has typical for that year transitional features. The headstock has the small size that was used in the pre-CBS era and the tuners are double-line Klusons. The headstock logo however is the larger post-’64 Fender type. The neck has pearloid position markers. The neckplate has an L845xx serial number. The grey bobbin pickups have a mid ’65 written date, the neck stamp is 2APR65B.
This is an extremely resonant instrument that has the typical woody and mellow mid-sixties Strat tone with lots of mids. The original, somewhat low frets are in good condition and appear to have never been levelled. The rosewood fretboard is very dark and has an attractive parallel grain pattern. Apart from the microphonestand-dent the front looks quite clean and the black factory finish over white primer still has a nice deep shine. There’s an old dealer sticker/badge from a store in Brussels, Belgium where the guitar was probably sold from first in the sixties.
The three-way switch was replaced with a five-way type. The pickguard has a pearloid back, which suggests it is from 1968-1969. At some time the bridge and neck pickup were switched from position and the bridge pickup appears to be rewound, which would explain its high (ca. 8kOhms) DC resistance.
