Fender / Telecaster Custom / 1974 / Mocha (translucent) / Guitar

The Telecaster Custom was introduced in 1972 as an attempt to update the Telecaster model to the then current musical trends. A Wide Range neck humbucker (developed specifically for this model by Seth Lover, who worked previously for Gibson) replaced the standard Tele neck pickup and the control layout was altered to be more like that of the then very popular Gibson guitars. Other new features were the 3-bolt neck attachment and the “notch-less” upper cutaway.

Partly because the Custom model was more expensive than a standard Telecaster and the new features didn’t really catch on, the Custom was never as popular as Fender hoped it would be, and production was stopped in 1981. Still, both Keith Richards and Mick Green used the Tele Custom prominently during the seventies.

This Telecaster Custom has a rosewood fretboard and alder body. The thin Mocha finish is more translucent than later models, showing a nice wood grain. The weight is relatively low compared to other Tele Customs. Apart from replaced volume potmeters this guitar is 100% original. It plays great and is a very versatile instrument. The neck Wide Range humbucker sounds very full but also more defined than a typical Gibson humbucker. All in all a great early seventies Telecaster that is great for rock and blues playing styles.
