Fender / Telecaster ** ON HOLD ** / 1968 / Blonde / Guitar
This guitar takes me right back to the Saturday nights of my youth. You know, when we were sitting around watching TV with Pawpaw and Memaw? Sandwiched right between WCW Wrestling and The Lawrence Welk Show was what we call down here a little bit of Southern heaven. You know what I'm talking 'bout, right? Hee-Haw. That was the show that depicted real Southern livin', right? You realize us Southerners all sit around in corn fields and for no apparent reason, pop up out of nowhere yelling, "Caw Caw". You also know that our hens (excuse me, women) walk around- no, wake up everyday wearing daisy dukes and plaid shirts with pig tails, no less. No wonder the rest of the world thinks we sleep with our cousins. As a young, and might I add impressionable child, I watched this show with the greatest of enthusiasm (like I had a choice). The women were all rather well- endowed and the men would, on special occasions wear those fancy Western jackets with rhinestone- laden wagon wheels and cacti. Guitars? You bet. They either played Martins or if they so chose, a Fender Telecaster. The twang from those guitars emitted from our well- worn, 13" Zenith TV speaker and was nothing short of mesmerizing. Buck Owens and his Buckaroos, not to mention the ever so talented Roy Clark made their weekly appearances. Roy just seemed to be able to play anything, from a banjo to a washtub. Simply put, he was the man. The reason I'm sharing this with you ("sharing"- a woman's term- nice) is so you can visualize that sound in your heads. Everyone from Marty Stewart to Bruce Springsteen knows the value of that unmistakable Tele tone and there truly is nothing like it. I think that Fender and Gibson can put out all the relics in the world, but the one thing they can't replicate is old wood tone. It takes forty + years to cure, like an old bottle of wine and that in itself is the essence of a great guitar. Someone, somewhere had to play a song on it that broke their heart to do it and someone, somewhere had to loose their guitar in a pawnshop to keep from actually losing it all. That gives a guitar soul and the man that has reverence for that, character. After all people, we are all just stewards of everything we posses. We don't really "own" anything, hence, we are just the keepers of the flame. So, if we own nothing and it's all borrowed, then steal away a little time with a guitar truly worthy of your reverence and time...
