Gibson Custom Shop / Ace Frehley Limited Les Paul ** ON HOLD ** / 1997 / Cherry Sunburst / Guitar
There are certain guitars that stick in my memory more than others as these past 13 years have passed and the Limited Ace Les Paul is among them. When I first met Lee back in 2000, he told me of the collection of guitars he had back in his vault. I was very curious to see them, mainly because there were some basses mentioned, but he also mentioned some KISS guitars and that peaked my interest as well. So, after a few months of bugging him, he finally said I could come over to check out his stash, but first, I had to pass a battery of tests. Among these tests were 12 consecutive spins of the Beastie Boys "License to Ill" (all in a 12 hour period and it almost killed me), eating a minimum of 3 plates of liver and onions at the local Longhorn restaurant (presumably to see if I would cave under pressure were I was ever captured by the North Koreans- it almost killed me) and finally, I had to restring a 1966 refinished Fender Electric 12. That last one may not sound too bad to most guitar players but if you're a bass player that's used to throwing 4 big, fat strings on a Jazz bass every once in a while, it can be considered as cruel and unusual punishment. The last test did kill me and this is actually my ghost writing this. Truth be told, I'd rather eat the danged liver and onions than to string some ratty Fender 12. Never again, I told myself. Anyway, I finally made my way into the hallowed Jackson Batcave and got to see, for the first time guitars like a highly quilted '80 Les Paul Heritage Elite, a '78 Ibanez Iceman with the Paul Stanley tags, a Frankfurt Flying V and a pair of near- mint '76 black Thunderbird basses. I was in hog heaven and when we made our way upstairs to get glasses of sweet tea (that's what Southern gentlemen do when the visitor has been deemed not to be an intruder), I looked over in the corner of the living room and to discover one the "mighty 300" Ace Les Pauls. I had to check that guitar out and Lee explained that they were limited in production and had flamed tops, etc. The top on that particular guitar was exceptional and him showing that Les Paul to me, along with the Ibanez PS-10 got us talking about KISS. The next thing we knew, it was like two old friends yapping about the glory days of KISS and letting a nice, sunny afternoon fly by. This guitar made me think of that day because of the similarity between the two tops- both have stunning flame and remind me of the first time I heard KISS "Alive". But, that's another story for another guitar- please call or email with any questions or requests!
