Gibson Custom Shop / Joe Perry Les Paul R9 VOS ** ON HOLD ** / 2013 / Perryburst / Guitar

Do you remember that '69 Pontiac Judge in carousel red, that monstrous creation by  John DeLorean, the one that majestically appeared in the opening of the movie "Dazed and Confused"? As this behemoth of chrome and steel, of horsepower and rally rims stalked the parking lot in that fictional place in middletown, Texas, the sound that fills my man cave is familiar, yet intoxicating. That unmistakable bass line expertly laid down by Tom Hamilton takes me right back, as if I'd never left. I was in middle school, riding in my brother's '72 split- bumper Camaro with windows down and Clarion stereo blaring. I've heard this song a million times since: that bass line, alongside Perry's electrified voice saying the words "Sweet Emotion." That is the intro to this movie and in a lot of respects, the intro to many of our lives. This song has got to be the sound track of our glory days and if you never caught the movie, it's your typical coming of age flick, fraught with the angst of social commentaries and class distinctions. The upperclassmen are hazing the incoming freshmen and everyone is trying to get stoned, drunk, or laid, even the football players that signed a pledge not to. If you were fortunate enough to have lived in this magical era, then you will straight get this movie. The writer of this film got us down cold, from the dialog to the flipping of bottle caps. This movie is the "American Graffiti" of the 70s generation. It was the time that you and I knew that we had become the chosen ones. The ones destined to pick up an axe and shred. That music formed our musical identity and to a degree, our souls. This guitar represents that to me: A souvenir of my youth and a tribute to one of the greatest rock guitarists to ever don a 'Paul. Some people collect cars to re-enter that portal to their youth, but for us, the "chosen ones", we reconnect with our guitars. They (society at large) don't have to understand. We never played guitar for them- it was always about us. Friends, join me in paying homage to the great ones of the past. That is what this is after all. As "Pink put it in the movie, "Now me and my loser friends are gonna head out to buy Aerosmith tickets. Top priority of the Summer". Check you later....
