Gibson / ES-175 D / 1956 / Sunburst / Guitar

Gibson archtop and a P-90 pickup is probably the perfect combination, a partnership that set the bar for amplified guitar tone throughout much of the 50’s and remains so influential. Introduced in 1949 as a mid level archtop, the ES-175's all laminate construction meant that costs could be kept down and also is noteworthy for being the first Kalamazoo design to feature a Florentine cutaway. The two pickup D model indication was introduced in 1953 and remained the same up until 1957 when hum buckers replaces the P-90's.

As you can see from the photos, the guitar itself is in superb condition. The guitar look to be in amazing condition and does not look anywhere near the 68 years old this one actually is!

The neck too is is excellent condition with a few small dings here and there the largest of which is on the back of the neck. The original frets show very little signs of wear which is also the case with the fretboard. The rosewood bridge, pickguard and pickup covers are original and, like the rest of the guitar, in great shape. There are a few cracks in the top laminate by the jack socket which is not too uncommon with these guitars.

The pickguard is warp free, all the hardware is original and in superb condition. The electrics are original with no disturbed solder joints and it sounds totally sublime..

The guitar comes in the original Gibson archtop hardshell case.

Tonally, this guitar is quite lively. As you’d expect, it’s loud acoustically, exhibiting a pleasing woody tone which comes across when amplified. Both pickups work well together and bring out the character of the guitar, taking you from a warm, rounded sound to something altogether more raucous. .

In our opinion, the finest incarnation of a classic 50’s ES-175D and an exceptional example. If you are looking an early, original double pickup 175 then this is as good as you'll get...
