Gibson / ES-175 DN / 1955 / Natural / Guitar For Sale

Gibson archtop and a P-90 pickup is probably the perfect combination, a partnership that set the bar for amplified guitar tone throughout much of the 50’s and remains so influential. Introduced in 1949 as a mid level archtop, the ES-175's all laminate construction meant that costs could be kept down and also is noteworthy for being the first Kalamazoo design to feature a Florentine cutaway.

The two pickup D model indication was introduced in 1953. The Blonde finish could be ordered at an additional cost, in 1955 that would have been $280 with a sunburst setting you back $265. That is around $3,275 in today's money.

As you can see from the photos, the guitar is in really nice condition. The top, back and sides show very little signs of wear. As is often the case, a plate has been placed around the jack socket as this area is often damaged.

The neck too is in excellent condition showing almost no signs of wear. The original frets have plenty of life left in them.

The rosewood bridge and plastics are correct and in good condition. The end pin has been changed.

The electrics look to be all correct and sound lovely and warm with the right amount of bite when required - just as a 50's P-90 arch top should be.

The guitar comes with a hardshell case

Tonally, this guitar is quite lively. As you’d expect, it’s loud acoustically, exhibiting a pleasing woody tone which comes across when amplified. Both pickups work well together and bring out the character of the guitar, taking you from a warm, rounded sound to something altogether more raucous. .

Blonde archtops are quite a prospect and this is an excellent example. Grab it before it gets away…
