Gibson / ES-335 ** ON HOLD * / 1999 / Blonde / Guitar
Blondes. I've dated a few (should have known better), married one (got a pretty good deal) and still think they are the prettiest ES-335s ever made. There's just a certain mystique about them and I once saw a fellow guitar dealer, Steve Clemente (R.I.P.) pay upwards of 45k for a blonde '59 ES-335 with two dowel rods in the headstock! This was a good few years ago and when I saw that deal go down, it was one of the most incredible things I had ever seen in my short time of attending guitar shows. We bought one of these '99 335s at the 2012 Dallas Guitar Show and just to fill the booth table up, I wiped it down and put it on a guitar stand. It didn't make it through the day and now resides in the Carolinas with an 'Elk in fine standing. Before he bought it, he asked me to remove the bridge pickup so he could get a look at the center block. It seems that on some of these '59 reissues, Gibson hollowed part of it out to install the electronics and this could have been an issue with the buyer, but as we took a gander at the interior, the block was solid and that deal was done. More wood, more tone I guess and so, exactly one year later at the 2013 Dallas show, we come across this beauty. Now my memory is fading somewhat at my semi- advanced age but I remembered the block- hollowing issue and after removing the rear pickup in this guitar, we were relieved to discover that the center block was indeed solid and not carved out. Brought smiles to both of our faces, so here for your enjoyment is this gorgeous '99 Blonde ES-335 in all her glory. Lee is out on a scouting trip this weekend but as soon as he returns, I'll pick out our best amp and get him to give her a whirl. I'll bet it's worth the wait...
