Gibson / Firebird I / 1964 / Refinish In Polaris White Nitro / Guitar

What a fun guitar  I bought this 1964 Firebird I many years ago in a pretty sorry state.  It had an ugly refinish and poorly done headstock repair, but the potential was obviously there, so I decided to bring it back to what it should be.  Firebird I's are rare guitars and bring a very high price in original condition.  This guitar is an opportunity to get into a real vintage instrument that plays and sounds amazing at a fraction of the price of an all-original example, and just about what you'd pay for a re-issue.

Shipping is free to the UK.  Please contact me for cost to other destinations.

Here are the details:

Re-refinish in period-correct Polaris White

Serial number sanded off in earlier refinish, but serial number was marked on underside of original pickguard - see photos

Nasty old headstock repair cleaned up and reset for stability - no tuning issues, and it's undetectable now (see photos)

Pro refret with big-but-not-huge Jescar wire

Seymour Duncan Antiquity pickup - just slightly hotter than stock (not necessarily a bad thing, as original Firebird bridge pickups tend to be on the weak side), but cleans up perfectly with the volume control (see video).  There are a a wide variety of excellent aftermarket pickups that are made correctly now if the Duncan doesn't float your boat, although I like it a lot.

Headstock overlay restored to original specs - the original had been sanded down excessively during the original refinish

Screw holes in headstock from mounting Steinberger lightweight tuning pegs - the set I got didn't work properly, so I put the originals back on.  A good set of Steinbergers would be a great addition to the guitar, as it makes the guitar a little more balanced, and their higher ratio makes for easier tuning.

Pots are original; tone cap replaced with high-quality Mallory 150-type

Mojo-Axe replacement bridge intonated for un-wound G string.  Makes a huge difference in the intonation.

Comes in non-original flight case - the interior could use reworking

One burn mark on the back of the guitar from a soldering iron that got away from me

The guitar plays beautifully all the way up the neck, and sounds great either clean or dirty.  Please take a look at the video (HD quality will sound the best) to hear how the guitar sounds into a tweed Deluxe - no processing, no compression, just the guitar and the amp.

That's about all I can think of, but I've tried to show everything in the photos.  If you have any questions, please contact me.  Thanks!

About Nine Ball Guitars

I've been collecting, buying and selling modern and vintage guitars for thirty years, first in the US, where I was born and lived for many years, and now, after moving first to London and now splitting my time between Devon and southwest France. My goal for 9Ball is to offer European guitar players and collectors an alternative to the high prices usually asked for guitars and amplifiers on this side of the ocean, along with a good selection of guitars on hand here in France, and a friendly and trustworthy partner in selecting your next guitar or amplifier.
