Gibson / Flying V2 / 1980 / Walnut / Guitar For Sale

Designed by Tim Shaw, the V2 was one of Gibson’s flagship instruments featuring a contoured five ply Walnut and maple body. Released in 1979 and available in maple or walnut finishes initially, the centrepiece of the design was the radical Boomerang pickups. These were two high output three pole single coils wired in series and out of phase so as to cancel hum. Along with brass hardware, this guitar had premium air but proved a step too far for the buying public and was discontinued towards the end of 1981.

Condition wise, this guitar is in great condition. There are a couple of  small dings to the finish but it looks like this guitar has only been lightly played in the past 44 years.

The neck is in great shape, the finish is still glossy. The fretboard and original frets show hardly any wear at all.

Hardware does exhibit some very slight wear which again suggests very little use.

Plastics are in great shape as you’d expect.

Electrically none of the solder joints look to have been disturbed with the pot codes reading 34th week of 1979 and unmolested Tim Shaw Boomerang pickups.

The guitar comes with its correct hardshell case

Once you’ve figured out comfortable way to hold the guitar (possible suggestion would be to skip the sitting down and stick it on a strap, one foot up on the monitor) we’re in familiar Gibson territory, especially to those of you who’ve wrangled an SG, albeit with a bit more wood to contend with. Easy access to the whole neck, the  pickups delivering an interesting blend of humbucker girth with single coil presence.

You will be noticed with this around your neck. Grab it before it gets away.
