Gibson / J35 Sunburst / 1938 / Guitar

In the heat of the Great Depression, the Gibson Jumbo wasn't selling all too well. To bring some cashflow back into the company, they introduced the J35. Essentially this was a lower-cost version of the Jumbo, mainly saving money under the hood using three tone bars and only scalloping braces when needed. This changed the sound however and provided a smoother tonal response often perceived as 'crisp' and 'lively'. When you pick up this typical 1938 (three tone bars, non-scalloped) model, you immediately feel why they made over 3000 of these (a figure much higher than any previous flattop acoustic). The guitar is as light as a feather yet feels more sturdy than your usual dried-out Gibson. She's aged beautifully, showing subtle weatherchecking in the light shades of her sunburst. The tuners have been replaced at some point and I think the playwear speaks for itself, but she has no cracks and is structurally sound. Strike your first chord (a G in my case) and you'll feel the power of this instrument right away. She sounds full yet dry and woody, has a wide dynamic response and has more headroom than a Fender Twin. What would've been regarded as a solid 'workhorse' back in the day, has matured into a refined, top-tier guitar over the past 84 years. Despite the higher production rate at the time, we don't come across sunburst J35s too often. They're also not as popular as it's older brother (and replacement) the J45. This J35 reminded me that these are truly special guitars and have a unique taste tone-wise, surely becoming more legendary by the minute. ABOUT US

I have always been opposed to being trapped into a job eight hours a day to purchase the free time to do what I enjoy. That’s why i started the Fellowship of Acoustics. The fellowship of acoustics was founded by Rudi Bults, Guitarist and obsessed with tone and wood. The idea was offering real expertise when trading and selling the finest instruments in the world from our showroom in Bergentheim, Netherlands. Helping others find the right tools and enjoying an atmosphere that’s unhurried, honest and informative that’s my go. We are nothing like the "supermarket" style music stores, but specialize in string-things only. We are widely known for Flattop guitars but also sell electric, mandolins & banjo’s, amps, parts, and accessories. Our store has earned the reputation for being a great place to shop for the best products and service.
It is our hope that this new website - much more than a list of "gear" for sale - will serve as an example of our commitment to offering a more personal approach, a friendly atmosphere, and an ultimately more satisfying experience for our friends and customers.
If you have any questions just dial +31-523-232205 or e-mail info@thefellowshipofacoustics.com My name is Rudi Bults, and I’m always here to help out. Wherever possible, we would recommend that you visit our store and experience our instruments and service first hand. However, because of our high standards you can be confident of ordering online from us. We hope you enjoy your visit to our site, and welcome your feedback.
