Gibson / L-5 W/factory Upgrades To '38 Specs When New ! / 1936 / Sunburst / Guitar
Gorgeous Dark Sunburst finish, wonderful blistered maple 2 piece back & sides w/a very flamey 3 piece neck, its Tortoise'gard is very clean, nice Pearl Block inlaid ebony fingerboard, its binding all over is perfect, this is a very rare transitional L-5...one of the 1st full year of 17" wide body production & 100% original. The story on this is it was first shipped on 24th January 1936 to New York Band, Gibson’s prime dealer/window in New York City. On 10th August 1936 NYB returned it to the factory where it apparently stayed in inventory for nearly 2 years while being reconditioned and upgraded – hence the small bound f-holes, the hinged tailpiece & the Grover Imperials. On 18th May 1938 it was shipped to Grinnells in Michigan as a display item (mentioned clearly in the ledgers). Finally on 2nd December 1938, it was shipped/sold to Chas Homeyer in Boston, Mass. It is exceptionally clean having only 1 small crackle hidden under the tailpiece on the top, now repaired & hardly visible, otherwise she's perfectly original & comes w/its original Tweed hard case.
