Gibson / Les Paul / 1968 / Goldtop / Guitar

Gibson Les Paul Standard 1968 goldtop serial 513492

This guitar is in very good condition, rating at 7 out of 10. It weighs 4238 grams, which is equivalent to 9.34 pounds. According to rumors, the 1968 Les Pauls utilized leftover wood from the 1950s, making them distinct from other late '60s LPs. They feature the correct angled neck, small headstock, and high-quality wood. The serial number on this guitar corresponds to the second version of the 1968 Les Paul, as indicated by the Les Paul Model silkscreen on the headstock instead of the initial crown inlaid version.

With the exception of the output jack plate, which has been replaced with a great-looking aged reproduction creme-colored plate (the guitar originally had a metal plate with new slot head screws), all parts on the guitar are original. The logo has a dotted "i," and it has a long tenon and square route control cavity. It boasts the correct double ring double line Kluson Deluxe tuners, which show traces of a set of Grovers that have since been removed. There is no volute, and the neck has a soft V-shape reminiscent of many '50s Les Pauls. The neck is made of one-piece mahogany with glued-on ears on the headstock, featuring slightly darker wood. It has deep binding in the cutaway and retains the original nibs, suggesting that the heavily worn frets are likely original (although a refret will be necessary soon, it will be left to the next owner).

The pots are dated 1376745, indicating they were made in the 45th week of 1967. All solder joints appear untouched, but there is an additional ground wire running from the bridge tone to the neck volume, as well as a wire soldered to a wood screw in the cavity. The guitar retains its original Gibson bridge (Pat No 2.740.313) with nylon saddles and the original lightweight aluminum tailpiece. The white plastic components, including the pickguard, have an added layer of aluminum foil underneath (the reason for which is uncertain). There is a noticeable fade beneath the pickguard on the gold top due to sunlight exposure. The strap button by the neck has been shifted approximately 10mm to the side, likely for improved balance. The finish shows numerous small dents, particularly on the top under the arm (possibly from a studded bracelet). Some finish wear is present on the back of the neck.

The guitar comes with its original square hard case with red lining and an original hangtag stamped with the model "L. PAUL STAN." It features 2-piece P90 pickups with original creme UC-452-B covers and see-through bobbins that have not been rewound, as confirmed by the factory masking tape. It has 4-piece reflector knobs. Inside the neck pickup cavity (which has the popsicle stick neck route characteristic of the '50s), there is an added piece of brown plastic to enhance the pickup screw attachment. There is a slight separation under the fingerboard near the last 5 frets before the body attachment, likely caused by wood shrinkage. The guitar currently has a modern reproduction switch tip, but the original (which is cracked) is still included in the case.
