Gibson / Les Paul 25/50 Anniversary ** ON HOLD ** / 1981 / Cherry Sunburst / Guitar
Sometimes, we discover a guitar that belies normal description. You look at it and then start asking yourself why "one of these things is not like the others" and that's when we break out our inner detective. When we first saw this guitar, three things were immediately apparent: The first is that there is no coil tap switch. The second item is that there is no "run number" and "Made in USA" stamped on the back of the headstock. Finally, the guitar is dated as being made in 1981. Strange indeed, no? So, on the way home from the Arlington show, Lee had plenty of time to discuss this particular guitar and it's oddities. Here's what we came up with: Since the run of 25/50 Anniversarys were made in 1979, with some stamped 1978, this guitar must obviously be a leftover from that run of approximately 1842 guitars. Furthermore, we speculated that it must have been either a custom order or employee guitar due to the lack of a coil tap switch and stamps on the headstock rear. Maybe the guy that had it built didn't want them there. Maybe Gibson wouldn't designate a "run number" because the production of the original guitars had ceased. Another feature that makes this guitar somewhat unique is the color. Cherry Sunburst was an option on these Les Pauls, but this is the only example we've actually seen in person. Most, as you all know were the darker, tobacco color with a few naturals surfacing every now and then. That all said, it's an exceptional Les Paul that both plays and sounds great. It also looks like it's spent most of its life in the case, so, as you would expect from us, the condition is also collector quality. Rare? Maybe. Cool? You bet and if you are a fan of this series of 70's Les Pauls but have always desired one that stands out from the crowd, this guitar most assuredly fits the bill. We're always on call and ready to be of assistance, so please don't hesitate to give us a ring!
