Gibson / Les Paul Custom / 1960 / Black Burst / Guitar
This, is an early 1960 or possibly an early 1961 Gibson Les Paul Custom however we think it is more than likely an early 1960 due to the neck profile. The first digit of the serial number has a ding on it and is very difficult to read. It has the coveted ‘59 neck profile as opposed to the slimmer late 60/61 and that is very nice indeed.
It is all original finish with no breaks however it has had a refret and the neck binding and possibly the fingerboard has been replaced. Whoever did this job did do a pretty good job and it has aged nicely to blend in to the rest of it. Just where the binding was replaced you can see touch ups in the paint but only under black light conditions.
All three pickups are PAF’s and sound wonderful as you would expect. The middle one looks to have been rewound but the others are fine. Electrically the pots are dates early 1961 and these could be later replacements. The tailpiece is also a later replacement but the bridge and the rest of the hardware and plastics is correct.
Included is the correct case for this which has the usual (for a 50’s LP Custom) hole in the lid where the switch has worn through.
Guitar plays really well and sounds killer. Due to the issues noted it is not a £50k guitar so is a bargain for an original one, with original finish and no breaks. It also definitly looks the part too..!
These 50’s LP Customs with PAF’s have shown strong gains in the past year or so as a few players get to appreciate exactly how good they do sound. Give this one a try and you will soon find out what this is…
