Gibson / Les Paul Custom / 1970 / Black Beauty / Guitar
This is one of the coolest guitars ever to pass through here and is also a bit of a bargain for what it is. It is a SUPERB original early 1970 Gibson Les Paul Custom Black Beauty with some 1969 features and it's original hard shell case. You do not come across these like this every day...
It is in nice original condition with all original paintwork, no neck or headstock breaks, 2 x original unmolested PAT number pickups with all stickers intact and original fretless wonder frets that are in great shape. The late 1969 features include, absence of a ‘Made In USA’ stamp on the back of the headstock, small mosquito bump volute, deep dish top carve and a nice, fairly chunky 68 type neck profile.
Everything as far as I can tell is all original with the exception of a few screws, the nylon bridge saddles and one pot which was changed in 1976. There is checking all over it and under a UV lamp, you can just see 2x small touched up screw holes by the bridge pickup that used to secure a Roland MIDI pickup, there is a crack on the top which looks like seam separation and two smaller areas by the controls that have been filled and again could be seam separation. None of these have gone through and none are structual. Please see photos.
Serial number of 916366, two of the three orignal pots I can jiust about get a date of 1970 from, the other as mentioned was replaced in 1979. Weight is a reasonable 4.35Kg. Pickups have never been out of this guitar, many solder joints are intact, undisturbed and guitar has just been set up, playing very well with a nice low action. The two pat number pickups sound great and evenly balanced too.
Condition wise, it is really nice but it does have a few dings, dongs and thongs here and there, some buckle rash on the back, plus a fair amount of laquer checking which is actually quite nice and vibey. There is also the usual wear on the gold plating but I have see a LOT worse than this.
No neck issure, no repaired headstock cracks, a sound guitar and probably sounder than the Pound is at the moment... :-)
