Here is a genuine – NOT REISSUE – 1976 Les Paul Custom Black Beauty.
All the usual Gibson Custom shop appointments – multiple layered binding – now significantly aged. Gibson branded Kluson style tuners. Gold Hardware throughout.
Now – PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A “GENUINE RELIC” – by that I mean that this 36 year old has been around the block a few times – and shows the battle scars to prove it. However these days people are paying 1000′s of pounds on getting this look – this guitar has been there, done the deed and bought the Tshirt! If you want a piece of living History read on – if you want “Wall Art” have a look at some of my other listings….
Starting at the top.
1. 5 layer W/B/W/B/W bound headstock, Gibson branded Kluson style tuners – in remarkably good condition. The heaadstock has a great selection of sinks, dents and scratches. Trussrod cover has a crack in the top screwhole. All inlays present and correct.
2. There is a period correct “small volute” at the neck/headstock join – much more comfortable to play than some of the larger volutes that I’ve seen. NO SIGN OF ANY NECK BREAK.
3. Ebony fingerboard shows no sign of wear.
4. Frets are low/wide type show little wear – however the fact that the tang ends are not over the binding makes me wonder whether at some time this has had a refret.
5. Back of the body is bound like the headstock, and has a plethora of scratches, dents, and chips – I’ve tried to show these in the pictures – there’s also one area of the lacquer that’s quite discoloured – just below the toggle cavity cover – looks like there may have been a “touch up” at some point. The guitar weighs in at 10.4lbs – so it’s no lightweight!
6. The body is of the “pancake”construction. Age has now resulted in a visible line around the outside of the body.
7. The front of the body has some large areas of lacquer checking – as shown in the pictures – there is yet another great selection of dinks and donks. I have replaced the knobs with a new set – the originals were all chipped and cracked – but they’re in the neck pocket of the case. 7 layer W/b/w/b/w/b/w binding is all intact and aged.
8. Electronics are original, crackle free and fully functional.
9. The neck pickup is original – but the gold cover has “significant” wear.
10. The bridge pickup is a Dimarzio Super Distortion – a common ’80′s mod on Les Pauls. The Original Gibson Gold cover for the bridge is also in the case should you want to match up the pickups.
11. I suspect that the Bridge is a later addition as it shows significantly less wear than the tailpiece, but it is a Gibson bridge.
Tuning and intonation are all great, the guitar comes with a TKL hardcase, it isn’t a Gibson badged one, but is the same make and style.
Battered, checked and bruised all over, I can only imagine what stories this guitar could tell – this is a “genuine relic!”
One in good condition would cost you about £3000 – and it wouldn’t look half as cool as this!
£2000 including insured UK Delivery. Includes a new TKL hard case (the same as Gibson use now).
POSH Guitars, UK
Philip's Old Second Hand Guitars (POSH Guitars) Has arisen not only out of my indefatigable enthusiasm for all things wooden with strings, but also from my love of music and creativity.
I firmly believe in a Creator God , who in his creativity gave us a gift. That gift being music, and in our expression of music we give voice to our passion for God.
I am not a company, but I buy guitars of a high quality, use them for a while and then sell them on. Sometimes this allows me to make a small profit, and I shift that profit on into financing the supply of quality instruments for Christian Musicians who are actively working in a recognised Church fellowship.
In this regard I'm happy to announce that Harvey Gerlitz has allowed me to distribute his Guitar Care Products in the UK, and hopefully through these establish a finance base to expand this mission.
In addition to resourcing Christian worship and creativity, 10% of any profits will be automatically passed on to financing Christian work in Africa, building orphanages to care for the victims of the AIDS epidemic there.
All items purchased will be despatched within 24 hours of received payment. Postage in the UK is by First Class postage, outside the UK it's by Air Mail.
