History
Few guitarists have meant so much to the sound of a generation of rock and roll music as Mick Jones did to the sound of the genre during the 1970s and 1980s. Jones’ musical journey was launched in Surrey County in southeast England during the late 1950s, where the roots of the British music explosion were beginning to take hold, and the emergence of such legendary artists as Jones, Eric Clapton, Brian May, Jeff Beck, Peter Gabriel and Roger Waters would soon redefine the blues and rock and roll landscape forever.
Armed primarily with a black Gibson Les Paul Custom, it was in 1976 that the British-born Jones co-created one of the era’s most defining bands, Foreigner. After numerous hits, it was 1984’s “I Want To Know What Love Is,” a power rock ballad written solely by Jones, became a No. 1 hit in both the U.K. and the U.S., as well as the band’s most important single. It was also voted by Rolling Stone as one of the 500 greatest songs of all time.
Jones connection to Gibson dates back to his early days in England, and it was only fitting that Gibson Custom honor his continued legacy with the launch of his very own Gibson Custom Les Paul model in 2008.
Body
The Mick Jones Les Paul Custom features all the meticulous details of Jones’ original model, including a one-piece solid mahogany body in an aged Ebony finish. The neck is also crafted from one solid piece of mahogany and fitted with a 22-fret ebony fingerboard, pearl block inlays, single-ply white binding and profile taken directly from Jones’ original guitar.
Hardware
The pickups are a pair of Gibson’s legendary ’57 Classic humbuckers with exposed coils, delivering all the raw punch and power of original PAF pickups. Featuring all gold hardware, other appointments include an ABR-1 bridge and light stopbar tailpiece, Schaller tuners and strap locks, a black metal jackplate and two mini toggle switches that deactivate each individual pickup in the middle position, bypass the volume and tone controls in the down position or activate the volume and tone controls in the up position. Every Mick Jones Les Paul Custom comes with the standard Gibson Custom hardshell case and certificate of authenticity.
