Gibson / Les Paul Custom SG / 1961 / White / Guitar

This is a very nice original SG Les Paul Custom with 3x PAF pickups and is also a bit of a bargain for what it is. It is a SUPERB original 1961 Gibson Les Paul SG Custom 3 pickup in polaris white with it's original hard shell case.

There are 3x original Patent Applied For pickups with all stickers mostly intact and many original parts. So here is what’s up - it has been re-fretted and over-sprayed by Mr Tom Murphy no less and it has had a crack by the neck heel repaired. The original paint was peeling and looked awful so Tom shot it over with some polaris white paint and did a minimal amount of ageing on it. The checking you see is mostly natural and unless I told you so, you would be very hard pressed to determine it was not the original finish. It is a totally superb job as you would expect from Mr Murphy.

The original serial number has remained on the back of the headstock as it was from the factory and Tom has also done the most amazing fret job making a beautiful guitar like this actually playable. He even built up the nibs on the end of the frets just like a proper factory job (see pictures). The new frets are slightly prouder than the original fretless wonder frets, still small but a lot more playable.

It is a late 1960 early 1961 with a serial number of 22339, it has of course a slim neck with a wide nut but not the real skinny type you would expect. Bridge is a non wire ABR-1 but is not original to this guitar and is a later one. Afraid I cannot make out any of the pot codes as it is just too wire congested in there but most of the pots and a lot of the solder joints look original to me.

Condition wise, it is very nice. There is checking all over plus a few minor dings here and there, mainly on the edges but again nothing too bad. There is also the usual wear on the gold plating but I have see a LOT worse than this. The tone knob that is stiff has the metal cap missing.

It plays very well, with an excellent, low action on the superb new frets. Tuners are original Pat Pending Grovers and it has the original black case with yellow lining and ‘Gibson’ metal badge that is also in very good shape. Weight is a nice and light (for a 3 pickup Les Paul) 3.4Kg and yes, the sideways Vibrola does work!
