Gibson / Les Paul Deluxe / 1975 / Blue Sparkle / Guitar

Here we have an extremely rare 1975 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe in factory original Blue Sparkle finish. According to the Gibson shipping totals book by Larry Meiners only 231 Blue Sparkle finished Deluxe’s were made between 1975 and 1977, making Sparkle finished Deluxe’s amongst the most sought after and desirable Les Paul’s made after the models re-introduction in 1968.

This particular guitar is one of the last Deluxe’s produced in the Kalamazoo factory, still sporting the desirable ABR-1 bridge and 3-piece mahogany neck as opposed to the later maple neck. Serial numbers on these early to mid 70’s guitars can be somewhat confusing, but all specs. are consistent with 1975. The serial number is in the 600000 range which we find throughout 1975 as well. The pot codes confirm this and date to week 41 of 1975.  Some consider 1975 to be the final year of “the real LP Deluxe”, because it’s specifications are still true to the original design.

When this guitar came in it was covered with 42 years of beer, sweet and nicotine, but after hours of cleaning and polishing it got it’s original shine back and looks perfect again. There is some normal playwear like you would expect from a guitar this age, but overall I would rate it as being in excellent condition. It’s all original, with the exception of the strap-buttons. The tuners have never been changed, and all electronics have remained untouched. There is a Patent sticker pickup in the bridge position and a Pat.no. engraved pickup in the neck position. Both pickups are original to the guitar. The pat. sticker pickup lasted till around late 1974, while the engraved pickup came in 1975, so some guitars from this period have one of each. There is a small finish crack between the B and high E tuner, which is only superficial and not in the wood, other than that there isn’t any checking on the guitar. Frets are near perfect and show hardly any wear. The guitar travels in a none original vintage case.

Though this is foremost a collectors piece it’s worth mentioning it’s also a great playing instrument. The action is low and the fretless wonder frets and slim neckprofile play effortless. The neck isn’t too slim though and has a smooth taper making it a bit more substantial towards the 12th fret. The mini-humbuckers sound amazing and offer with loads of briliance and clarity, and while you can also get a nice jazzy sound from them they are not as middy-sounding as regular humbuckers. They also do the “Tele-o-Steroid”-thing very well. In terms of weight I would estimate this at around 4,5 KG which is fairly light for a Les Paul from this era. All in all a very enjoyably guitar to play with a impressive tone.

These sparkle finished Deluxe’s are very sought after by collectors, and while they were already rare to begin with there certainly aren’t too many around today. An all original example like this will make a very solid investment and will continue to appreciate in value. Not only does this guitar feature a rare Sparkle finish, it also has all the desirable specifications from that era, and besides being a unique collectors piece it’s also a wonderful musical instrument with a truly inspiring voice!
