Gibson / Les Paul SG Standard / 1963 / Cherry / Guitar

This guitar has quite a story. The original owner had a 1963 Gibson Les Paul/SG which suffered quite a serious neck break by all accounts in the early 70s. He sent the guitar back to Gibson, asking them to repair the guitar.

A couple of weeks later he had a call from the Gibson workshop saying they could not, or would not be able to repair it. So after a bit of negotiation, all the electronics and hardware were transplanted from the 63 in to a new body and this was returned to the customer, the serial number from the original 63 was stamped onto the headstock. 40 years later we find ourselves with an early 70s SG kitted out with nickel hardware and Patent Number pickups from an original 1963 Les Paul SG...!

The guitar is in great condition with very little signs of use and only very minor fading to the finish. There is a cosmetic chip to the finish near the controls.

The neck and fretboard are in superb condition with plenty of life left in the frets.

The nickel hardware is in great shape with some light patina.

The pickguard is from the early 70s but the other plastics are from the original 1963 guitar including a late, no wire ABR-1.

Electrically these are factory solder joints and as such we can’t tell which were made in the 60s and which were made in the 70s though it's probable that the loom was removed intact.  The Patent Number pickups are in great condition with no sign of being tampered with. Pots date to 20th week of 1963.

The guitar comes with the correct hardshell case from 1963.

Tonally, this guitar  really brings quite a unique perspective on the twin humbucker combination and it basically sounds like a 1963 Les Paul SG SG does. The smoothness of the neck pickup with the bite of the bridge and never too woofy. Like any Gibson from this period and earlier, there is such a scope to the sound, a notion that was lost with later incarnations from the venerable manufacturer.

This guitar has such a great story and is in such great condition and would make such a fantastic addition to any collection.
