Gibson / Les Paul Special / 1960 / Cherry / Guitar
In an attempt to breathe new life into the cheaper end of their Les Paul family, in late 1958 Gibson changed the design of the Junior to a Double Cut and introduced a cherry finish which increased sales immediately. 1959 saw the introduction of the Double Cut Special with the same Cherry finish with similarly impressive results.
This guitar looks stunning. The top has faded when compared to the back. As with any of these cherry Gibsons, its a fine showcase for the mahogany grain. There are a few very minor knocks but overall this guitar has been extremely looked after. The 1960, wide, low profile neck is smooth and the fretboard is in great shape, the frets have plenty of life left in them.
Also very noteworthy is the fact that this guitar is totally break free, especially around the neck heel. Neck breaks are an ailment that is such a common factor with these guitars that have the earlier pickup layout but this one has suffered none of this, not even stress cracks. The headstock is surprisingly free of wear. The guitar was previously fitted with different tuners but these holes have been filled, redrilled and very professionally touched up.
The plastics are in great condition as is the nickel hardware. The electronics are all straight too with undisturbed solder joints.
The guitar comes with a hardshell case
This guitar feels very comfortable to play with a wonderful resonance and sustain. The pickups, as you’d expect, run the gamut from smooth to bitting. The neck pickup has a full tone which really accentuates the sustain of the guitar without sounding wooly. The bridge pickup delivers that penetrating, attitude filled sound that we want from our slab of mahogany. You will not be disappointed!
These guitars don’t always make it. The neck joint is vulnerable but this one has made it this far. The guitar is in stunning condition and delivers in so many ways, the neck profile alone should be enough. You will kick yourself for missing out….
