Gibson / Les Paul Special / 1961 / Cherry Red / Guitar
Nice, players vintage Les Paul Special at a decent price, that has a good 59 type neck profile too, so why is it so cheap...?
This is all I know about it - original 1960/1 Les Paul Special that has obviously and like a great many of these, had some neck work done on it. Whatever was done was done a long time ago as the whole guitar black lights just like a proper vintage one would, both neck and body.
What work was done was carried out very professionally as you do not notice any glaring repaired cracks like you do on most. All you can see is a tiny bit of old filler by the neck seam and when you when you lift off the original pickguard you can see the thin bit of wood on the top of the tenon broke off just above the route for the pickup wire.
Neck is a 17 degree pitch headstock, '59 chunky feel which is so very nice. Frets have plenty of meat left in them and look original and correct for the era still having most of the nibs present. Logo is a bit strange as it does not have an open b or o. I have no idea why this is.
Original pickups really do stonk (as in stonking) and have been shimmed up slightly so they are as close to the strings as they can get for a very powerful sound. Tuners are original as is all the electrics.
Wraparound tailpiece and studs have been changed for quality, lightweight nickel replicas. Pickguard and knobs are original as is the soft-shell 'gator case which are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
This is one of the finest sounding and playing vintage Les Paul Special's we have had here and there is no doubt of that!
