If you ever bought a guitar that buzzed when you played certain notes, you are aware of how important it is to have the frets and neck properly set up. The technique of fine-tuning the neck and frets previously required hours of handwork by a skilled luthier but can now be accomplished using the innovative German-built Plek machine. This incredibly sophisticated, computer-controlled machine scans and evaluates the frets along the length of the neck. Then it compares the neck to stored optimum values, and using precision robotic tools, it cuts and smooths the frets and nut to achieve the best balance of playability with minimum string height. The result is a fretboard that feels like it has been lovingly crafted and played for years, with every note ringing out clear and true. Accomplishing such a fine-tuned action is possible with the help of a great luthier but if you don’t have time or access to one of those luthiers, then a Plek’d guitar allows you to achieve the best playing guitar in a fraction of the time. Gibson also switched from the 490R/498T to the Burstbucker Pro Alnico V pickups (higher output than the Alnico II), with asymmetrical coils like the legendary PAF, but with a higher gain in the bridge, and less wound in the neck pickup. One of the most interesting features was the asymmetrical neck. Not a 50’s rounded, not a 60’s Slim Taper, but a mixture of both, it being “chunkier” closer to the bass notes. It is very comfortable and hasn’t lost a bit of that classic feel (they have been profiled by hand, if that helps)..
