Gibson / S-400 1939 Blue Ribbon / 1993 / Blonde / Guitar

This is a totally stunning guitar... The quality of workmanship and the amazing quality of materials make this Gibson Blue Ribbon guitar something really special and is just as good as any vintage S400 we have seen.

In further reckoning with its past, 1993 saw Gibson lay the groundwork for the standalone Custom, Art & Historic division by organizing and expanding its Historic Collection. Along with the '59 Les Paul Standard reissue, the cover guitar for the 1993 Historic Collection catalog was a reissue of the '39 Super 400P, the gold standard for archtop guitars in the prewar era.

Spec’d by Terry Ryan, the new model was based on an original example owned by Tom Van Hoose (author of a book on the Super 400) and who played a major role in building the prototype.

This is one of very few Blonde examples built in that initial run and was one of only two in the country at the time.

The guitar is in stunning condition. A true testament to the craftsmanship of the Custom, Art & Historic division, this guitar could have so easily have come from the golden period. Evidently well cared for, there is hardly a mark to be seen. A stunning showcase for some striking woods. It even includes a replica of the

The neck is in exquisite condition in what seems like unused condition. The flamed maple is stunning and the attention to detail is clear.

The hardware is unmarked and free of tarnishing.

The guitar comes with two pickguards, one fitted with a floating pickup and a volume pot. Both of these are as you'd expect in excellent condition.

The guitar comes with its correct hardshell case that's a great reproduction of a period case. This also includes the COA and other paperwork.

Like the L5, the Super 400’s  reputation was built on being able to keep up with a horn section and this one is no exception. It has an authoritative voice acoustically that has a wonderful three dimensional quality that’s so evocative of the period.

A rare find, this guitar would make a fine addition to any collection. Tone and looks to match, what more do you want?
