1972 Gibson SG Pro in Natural
Introduced in June 1971, the Pro replaced the Special as Gibson tried to shake things up at the beginning of a new decade. Though not a huge departure, the new guitar introduced some new features such as a front-routed control cavity, zero degree neck angle, deeper set neck and a Les Paul style pickguard. It also saw the return of the narrow 1 9/16" nut and the introduction of the laminated neck with volute. Color options given where Cherry, Walnut with Natural being the rarest. Poor reception meant that the Pro was discontinued in mid ‘72 with the last 25 guitars being shipped between 1973 and 1974.
The guitar is in great shape. There is very little sign of wear and no damage anywhere on the body. There is the inevitable dink here and there but nothing that detracts from the overall look.
The neck too shows a few signs of knocks. There is a patch that's been repaired on the headstock where one of the wings had cracked along with a mark from a hanger. This has been repaired. There is also a small crack on the volute. This looks to be stable and does not affect playability. The fretboard and original frets are in good condition
The plastics are in good condition as is the hardware. The Schaller ‘harmonica’ bridge shows only slight signs of pitting.
Electrically, everything looks correct and untouched.
The guitar comes with its correct plush-lined Gibson hardshell case.
Though maybe not your go to SG, this guitar will surprise you. The neck pickup yields a smooth tone that has a brightness which blends and compliments the gritty bite of the bridge. The neck is very comfortable.
A rarity here at ATB Guitars, this guitar could be your gateway into the vintage market that you wouldn't mind taking out to a gig and goes someway to showing that not all Norlin era Gibsons are to be avoided.
