Gibson / SG Standard Factory BLACK! / 1968 / Black / Guitar
1968 was the year it seems Gibson experimented a bit and produced some very cool factory black finishes. You occasionally, albeit rarely, see a black ES-330, 175 or Trini Lopez and I even had a '68 factory black ES-335 about a year ago but super rare to see are the factory black solid bodies. This is one of them and is the first factory black 60’s SG I have seen in the flesh...
This is a Superb original Gibson 1968/9 vintage SG Standard finished in factory black which is quite a find and is a stunning guitar that may take you a lifetime to find another...
This one is 100% original except it has had other tuners on it at one stage as you can see the washer rings on the headstock, fortunately there were no extra holes made by these tuners and correct Kluson Deluxe tuners are back on there now. Everything else, including all the hardware, electrics is 100% original, as it left the factory in late 1968, early 1969.
Aside from a very small area of touch up by the strap button, the finish is 100% original too and apart from a few small dings and some checking, in very nice condition. If you black light it, the whole guitar lights up and glows like a green genie and the black has that almost blueish hue you get on the old Les Paul Customs. The cavity also looks just like an old Les Paul Custom.
Interestingly, I think the electronics and pickguard were assembled in 1966 as all the pots are dated 1966 and just like the 1967 Flying V I had last week it bears the same factory inspection stamp on the underside of the pickguard that you can just about make out. Serial number is 565502, it has a one piece neck, long tenon and has the very early, transitional pantograph logo that you only see in late 68 and 1969 where the black has worn away to almost a ‘no logo’ type of effect.
Guitar plays superbly well, very fast action, superb original frets with plenty of meat still left and a wonderful, balanced meaty sound from the 2x original PAT number pickups which I think are definitely going to be pre T-top - basically short magnet PAF’s.
I am also happy for the buyer to have it examined by his/her expert of choosing and if they are not happy, I will provide a no quibble refund. I know buying such a rare item can be risky but I do not think I can be fairer that that..
Case looks to be correct and is in good condition. Altogether this is an amazing and very rare instrument that would make a pretty good investment. Inspection is welcome at any time, by appointment, in Cheltenham, UK.
