Godin / RG-3 Passion Series / 2008 / Guitar
The Godin RG-3 model is made in Canada in Godin’s Premier Atelier by a few select guitar makers, and is a unique testament of what Robert Godin and his team are capable of. Godin guitars are well known for their innovative designs and the RG-3 is no exception, implementing acoustic guitar elements into a familiar single-coil guitar concept.
The body of the RG-3 features 5 synchronized tone-chambers making this guitar not only incredibly lightweight, but also amazingly resonant. The choice of wood for the body on this particular example is red cedar which is covered by a bent-top mahogany top! Not the kind of woods you’d expect on an electric guitar, but it matches Godin’s philosophy of intergrading acoustic properties into the design, and I must say it works. Rarely do you come about an electric guitar so lively and dynamic is this one. The maple neck and fretboard provide some extra articulation and overtone which proves to be a splendid choice in conjunction with the mahogany top, the tends to add a little more bottom end.
The pickups are of Godin’s own design and are unique to this model. The tuners are Gotoh 510 locking tuners with a 1:18 ratio, and are super accurate and stable.
This RG-3 is in excellent to near mint condition, yet it has a few minor modifications. The bridge pickup has been changed for a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder, and the mounting screws of the pickups have been changed for allen wrench screws. To facilitate this modification threaded bushings have been inserted underneath the pickups. I’m not why the previous owner choose to do this, but it looks cool anyway. Also there appear to be two small repaired holes on the headstock as if the string trees were at one point moved to a different position.
Included is a deluxe Godin gigbag + a luxurious faux alligator hardcase. The hardcase was only featured on the very first series of the RG-3!
