Gretsch / 6120 Chet Atkins / 1959 / Orange / Guitar
The 6120 Chet Atkins model is the holy grail of Gretsch guitars, and I’m thrilled to have this stunning 1959 example in the collection. This iconic and sought after model hardly ever surfaces in Europe, and has recently been acquire from a pro-musician in the US. A highly collectible and superb playing instrument, from the Golden Era of Gretsch.
The 31XXX serial number indicates this an early 1959 example. In that year the 6120 received a zero-nut and later the Gretsch bigsby. This one still has the earlier Bigsby pat. bridge. Other typical 6120 features for this period are, ebony fretboard with thumbnails, bar-bridge, and Gretsch PAF filtertron pickups.
Now if you’ve ever heard these vintage Filtertron pickups, you’ll know they sound like nothing else. These low output humbucking pickups have an incredibly transparent and rich sound, and capture every nuance of your playing. The bridge pickup will deliver that airy country pickin’ sound, while the neck pickup is warm enough to even cover jazz. Naturally the 6120 model has earned it’s place in rockabily music, but it’s an exceptional guitar for blues and country picking too.
Despite being 58 years of age this 6120 is in excellent condition and structurally sound. The orange finish has slightly faded, and there are a few small cracks in the binding due to shrinkage, but this is just typical wear for these old Gretsch guitars and all is perfectly stable. Aside from a refret and one changed pot for the master volume, which reads 1976, everything remains original. Had different tuners in the past, but the originals are back on now. The ebony base of the bridge broke during transport, but is seamlessly repaired and more solid than ever before. The guitars plays extremely well, with no buzzing or deadspots, and is ready for it’s next 6 decades of carefree playing. A remarkable find, especially in this fine condition.
This beautiful 1959 Gretsch 6120 Travels in it’s original hardcase, which is in roadworn but 100% functional condition. According to the sticker on the case it was originally purchased at Arthur’s music store in Indiana who have been in business since 1952. This iconic piece of musical history is a great investment, as the value of 6120’s has kept steadily increasing in recent years.
